The paradox:

Take your job seriously! Yairs yairs I take my job seriously, I’m comitted to what I do, I want to do a good job etc etc.  What happens when things happen that are very difficult to navigate?  When stuff happens that you don’t like and don’t have much influence to change?  If you take your job seriously do you necessarily take the “problem” to heart, get seriously upset about it?  Or is there still room to laugh it off?  To be able to see a funny side in it? Is this a sensible way to stay sane?

I watched The Moon recently with the Gazman and the Poet. It was suggested that we only ever see one side of the moon. I realised I didn’t know how the moon worked, I googled it and this guy didn’t know either. He went to the trouble of drawing pictures with explanations … it didn’t help that much, I think I need someone with oranges and bits of string and an animated voice describing how it all works … no I’m not going to check utube, I will wait til I meet someone who can demonstrate it!

spot the local musician …

I played netball last night and came a cropper. I have a huge egg above my left eye. It happened at the centre pass, I tripped (or was I pushed? it is bitchball after all and I was getting a few good shots in …) and got a bit of height and landed on my head! My reaction was to swear (f(*&%! that hurts! f&*%$k that really hurts) while lying on the ground. I got up and walked off court slurped some water and got back to playing. I was quite cross about it and as a result found some focus and actually got a few good goals in.

When we were kids the remedy for a bump on the head was a lump of butter smeared on the area. I got home and used frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel as a cold compress. That soothed it.

My lovely billy lid now plays with me and we needed to recruit her friend as we were a player short. Am loving playing with her (we even did a quarter in goasl together). I hope she wasn’t too shocked by my reaction to falling over. She was very caring when we got home and suggested I should stay awake for a while in case I have concussion. We ate Conniseur ice cream together and watched some crappy TV.

Good news is, it hurts to frown.

You might have wondered about a recent post relating to the (not so) joyful experience of going to school. My lovely little billy lid is doing her final exam for year 11 today – it’s Physics. I think she is so smart, she can do maths and physics and she also is a drama student and it so creative. She loves to read and its so great to share a common passion.

I wished her luck this morning and she said, ‘thanks I’ll need it!’. She hasn’t really studied or even done all the assessments for physics. Her motivation for this subject is low low low – what will she ever need it for?

The one thing she knows about her future is that she doesn’t want to go to Uni. What the? Uni was fun, it was interesting and challenging to be learning new and extended knowledge. How come I haven’t been able to convey that to her? Or have I and it’s just not what she wants to do.

I think she might be a ‘doer’ not a thinker. And who knows, in this day and age maybe that’s the kind of people we need. Perhaps we’ve all been thinking about stuff for too long, maybe it’s time now to just get in there and do it. After all, if you don’t know something you can google it. The answers are all out there.

How is it that I just can’t regurgitate facts!! I passed two Human Biology exams at university so I MUST be able to retain hard facts – it’s not impossible and yet … I went to a quiz night on Saturday and found it very difficult to spit out more than 3 correct answers . Others on the table were coming out with obscurities all over the place – who wrote ‘Heidi”. Lady Sultana was on the table, she knew the answer to what is a ‘kibitzer’ (and check out this link to see what other terms she would know), what’s the oldest architectural style – Gothic, renaissance or baroque? – the well traveled lawyer knew this one, his wife nailed the ‘what does psso stand for?” – click here for the answer.

Classes are boring.

Recess and lunch aren’t too good either, bad canteen food, sitting in the cold, and sometimes the wet talking to people you dont always like. And knowing you’re just waiting around to go back to class.

After school is great.

The bus ride home you have the realisation you have to do it all again tomorrow.
