cold war memories

Little Horse Man wrote an email that made me think about growing up in the Cold War years…. he sent a link about a book that, “details the making of the nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union”

My cold war escape plan involved getting myself to Augusta because it is the southern most tip of western Australia – the logic was that the wind would blow the nuclear fall out off the coast so i would be safer??? – I was at a boarding school in Bunbury so it was a feasible plan.  I remember being very moved (and frightened) by a book that was written in the form of a diary of a young (teenage) girl’s experience of a nuclear war.  The cover of the book and the design of the book was very well designed so it really looked like a diary. Maybe they’d even done clever font so it looked like hand writing.

I think I was a gloomy optimist!! thank goodness they worked it all out and we’re all safe now ….
